When it's not being used, the trailer connector is stored in the cargo area of the vehicle. When it's needed, run the trailer connector out the back and close the rear hatch on it. As long as you avoid the area of the latch, the wire will not be damaged. This is typical of a brake controller. They use a direct battery connection for safety reasons. With a direct connection to constant 12V power from the battery, there's no way the user can forget to turn on the brake controller before towing. This concerns many people, who fear that the controller will drain their battery but the good news is that the controller will go into a sleep mode after 10-15 minutes of inactivity. Although some folks likely ignore the statement in the owner's manual that says the vehicle cannot be used to tow a trailer, most folks use the hitch as an attachment point for a hitch mounted accessory like a bike rack or a cargo carrier. You can, as long as the replacement wheel you choose has the same bolt pattern and you retain the proper clearance in the wheel well (4 inches to the top and sides and 2 inches between the inside of the tire and the trailer frame). What tire size are you planning on going with?

The hitch itself is rated at a 5000 lb towing and 500 lb tongue weight capacity. The 2017 Highlander has a manufacturer stated capacity of 1500 lbs for the 2.7L 4 cyl engine or 5000 lbs for the 6 cyl engine. Toyota lists the maximum tongue weight at 11% of the towing capacity which would be 165 lbs for the 4 cyl or 550 lbs for the 6 cyl engine. You'll need to abide by the lowest rating. So, make a long story longer, two jet skis plus the trailer and equipment will typically weigh about 2000-2500 lbs. If your Highlander has the 4 cyl engine, your jet skis and trailer will be too heavy, but you'll be good to go if you have the 6 cyl engine.
